TEAM HISTORY
The Macon Waves Swim Team, a program of the
Macon-Bibb
County Parks and Recreation department and Macon Waves, Inc., has been
in existence since 1975.
The Recreation Department founded the Macon Waves swim team as a summer
program in 1975. The next year the parents were asked to form an
association to manage the team while the Recreation Department
continued its sponsorship. Within a few years the team evolved into a
year-round activity.
Philosophy
Macon Waves Swim Team has been in existence
since 1975. Since that time, our philosophy has been to:
- Promote Competitive Swimming
- Provide the opportunity to learn and develop the
basics of competitive swimming to one’s fullest potential
- Teach good sportsmanship and teamwork
- Respect authority, play fair, and strive to
improve. Winning is not as important as striving to do one’s best
- Teach the value of team loyalty and friendships
- Develop self-confidence, self-motivation, and
self-discipline
- Encourage the lifelong habit of physical fitness
- Encourage fun through sport
Practice Groups
- Each swimmer will be assigned to one of four
ability/age groups. If
siblings are assigned to different practices, the faster child may be
reassigned to the slower practice at the parent’s request, but not
vice-versa.
- Precompetitive Instruction is offered for beginners
(ages 4+).
Enjoyment of the water and safety in the water are emphasized. Basic
strokes are introduced.
- Beginner swimmers (ages 5-10*) are relatively new to
the team. They
will be introduced to the competitive swimming techniques and rules.
Swimmers will learn and practice basic mechanics of the four
competitive strokes.
- Intermediate swimmers (ages 8-11*) know their strokes
and are
beginning to build speed but have not developed endurance. Swimmers
will continue to learn and practice basic mechanics of the four
competitive strokes, starts, turns, finishes and reading the pace
clock. Emphasis will be placed on competitive swimming rules and team
building.
- Advanced swimmers (ages 12-18*) have demonstrated a
total
commitment to the sport and to a serious level of competition. Swimmers
exhibit a high level of competency in the four competitive strokes.
Swimmers of this level train with emphasis on endurance, pace,
development, stroke technique refinement and mastering of competitive
skills.
* Plus or minus a year depending on experience,
endurance and when the swimmer began competitive swimming.
